The Whitechapel was founded in 1901 to bring great art to the people of East London. The Gallery is internationally acclaimed for its exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and its pioneering education and public events programmes. The Whitechapel is entering an exciting new phase in its 106-year history. Following the former Whitechapel library’s move to new facilities, the Whitechapel has acquired the building to restore it and keep it open as a free art gallery all year round. The expanded Whitechapel will open in 2009.
